When the song rings out, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend,” your mind instantly goes to Marilyn Monroe. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes paints a picture of a beautiful, curvy woman dancing and singing in a pretty pink dress. How could diamonds and precious gems put your mind in a dark place? Diamonds have another, more wicked, best friend; a thief.
Why do criminals love jewelry?
If you think about it, diamonds are one of the most, if not the most, expensive item you can find for its volume. A mere pound of diamonds would run you $17,494,400. With that, you can see why jewelry is so tempting for criminals. This is an unfortunate truth for those trying to run a business that is centered around selling these diamond rings to loving couples that are looking to purchase a symbol of their everlasting commitment.
How can I secure my jewelry store?
All hope is not lost. There have been many advances in physical security products and accessories that can protect your valuable goods. A good starting point is security surveillance cameras. Cameras will unfortunately not lessen the loss your store endures but they can be helpful in two ways. They can deter a potential burglar or robber from making a move. If they see the cameras, they may think twice before making a move. It could be potential motivation for moving on to a different location, where they would be less likely to get caught. That brings up the second benefit. With a good set of well-placed cameras, the likelihood of catching the perpetrators is significantly increased. Even if you don’t have your diamonds back, justice feels much better than a lengthy bout of bitterness.
A great option that actually will decrease your degree of loss is installing bullet-resistant glass to your display cases. The one-offs are bound to happen. A thug comes into your store and asks to see your most expensive piece of jewelry and runs off after fondling it for a bit. These are significant losses but not near as bad as losing everything in your store. If a criminal comes in, starts smashing up your cases, and runs off with all of your jewelry; it is likely you won’t be able to bounce back. This is exactly why it is so important to have strong glass that can withstand a smash or gun shot. Criminals want to get in and out as quickly as possible. They may wait for one or two cases to be opened and distributed to them, but they will soon retreat to decrease their chances of getting caught.
The last recommendation I will be making is a TL-30 UL Rated safe for overnight storage. It may be inconvenient to move your product back and forth, but it is well worth it. TL-30 rated safes have been tested and proven to be impenetrable for up to 30 minutes.
With these three physical security products implemented, you can save yourself from a lot of heartaches.
